Life on the Farm

I meet amazing people podcasting with “To Mom is To Love.” This past spring, I recorded an episode with pediatric speech language pathologist Elizabeth Nielsen about her unique practice. She told me all about her farm and the fun way she incorporates education and learning with her property and animals. It turns out she also opens her farm to guests and I brought my family this past weekend. We had a great time!

The Little Cottage on the Farm feels like another world away, but is still very accessible to Chicago. It is located in Elburn and the last stop of the Western suburb train line.

Cats and turkeys ran up to us as we got out of our car. The surrounding cornfields evoked tranquility and the goats raised their heads with curiosity at new people to potentially give them food during feeding times.

Elizabeth does a fantastic job incorporating kids into farm-life immersing them into a real life “Old MacDonald” song. From horses neighing, chickens clucking, ducks quacking, and pigs oinking.

Elizabeth is also passionate about education. She is the owner of Tiny Voice Therapy which combines horses and speech therapy. Elizabeth also wrote a children’s book called “Udder Chaos” based on “shenanigans on the farm.”

Learning does not only occur in the classroom. There is so much to soak in for both children and adults. For kids, they learn about responsibility, hard work, and confidence as they feed the animals. For adults, we learn the importance of slowing down.
